A 10 minute bumboat ride from Changi Point Ferry Terminal, Palau Ubin is a glimpse of jungle Singapore before it became the shiny, sophisticated city we know and love.
Jump off your bumboat, turn left and hire a bike for the day from one of the many island vendors from between $8 and $12 a pop. You’re then free to pedal around the island on the many paths that lead you from ocean to rubber plantation to mangroves to ponds of lotus flowers.
It’s the Singapore slow lane and the beer sure tastes great after a few hours of cycling. There are a few restaurants in town so grab a meal and a beer before you head back to the city.
The only downside for me was the rubbish – a combination (I think) of there being very few bins on the island (if any), and the fact that many people still havent got the message that littering is wrong. Someone left their empty waterbottle in my bicycle basket , so I guess rather than carry their litter people will offload or drop it on the ground. It’s very sad that they dont respect this beautiful island and the many people that work hard to protect its biodiversity.
But other than that it’s a great day or half day out at a beautiful location that will leave you with a big smile on your face (but a sore bum from riding a bike).
