Our trip to Borneo earlier this year was a bit of test for Emmie and me. In preparation for our year in Asia, I wanted to see if we could manage a different style of accommodation to what we’ve become used to over the past five years, so we ventured out from resortland and dipped our toes into the world of budget accommodation.
I have always been a nervous flyer. I fly Qantas everywhere because I trust them implicitly, and I even pay extra to fly Qantas on routes where there is a lot of competition.
Wow, Gunung Mulu National Park is mind-blowing and a must-do if you can get there. Its dense rainforest, incredible array of insects, world-biggest caves, rivers and waterfalls are truely spectacular.
We’re in Borneo on a budget. It’s not too difficult but I am missing basics like room service and a hotel pool. However, I’ve found an awesome solution – use someone elses hotel pool, for a fraction of the cost of staying at the hotel.
It may seem like a long way from Sydney, Australia to Disneyland California but I’m here to tell you it can be a lovely, seamless journey from door to door.
I’m not really sure what happened…one minute I was looking at possible destinations for the July school holidays and then all of a sudden I’d booked flights to Kota Kinabalu and was planning two weeks in Borneo in early June.
