The highs of low season travel

The highs of low season travel

It’s low season for a reason…which for beach holidays  is generally bad weather. No one wants their tropical holiday to be a week of rain and storms.

But low season also presents a great opportunity to travel cheaper and get great discounts on fancy hotels – if you’re prepared to take a risk.

We’re just back from a week in Fiji during low season – the hot, stormy, windy months from January to March.

The week before we left the forecast of a 95 percent chance of rain every day. I was resigned to rain and sitting inside playing games all week.

But low and behold….the weather was amazing, with only one day of the six rainy and windy, although there were a few overnight storms.

And we got to experience many of the benefits of low season travel – the top three are below:

Low room rates.

We stayed at the Intercontinental Fiji and it was divine. With room rates from $700 per night, it’s not on the list for high or shoulder season travel for us. But the $302 per night cost during low season was tempting enough and allowed us to try out a lot of luxury for a reasonable rate.

No crowds.

Only the risk-takers are travelling at this time, the Safety Stephs are all at home, waiting for weather security. This means no pool side lounge bagsing at 5am to secure your sport cause there’s no one around. No booking restaurants or kids clubs. Pools are vacant. It’s quiet. It’s peaceful.

Super attentive service.

Staff are just waiting for a guest to need a drink/towel/food…although I’m sure service is always great at the Intercontinental but when there’s around 10 staff poolside to look after 15 guests it’s just at another level.

I’d definitely do low season travel again, it’s definitely a risk worth taking…but pack lots of books and games for the kids just in case.
