CHINA’S GLASS WALKWAY WITH KIDS: ZHANGJAIJIE

This is one of our must-sees – the glass walkway in China! We visited Zhangjaiie in China on an impromptu trip thanks to Emmie. She saw photos of China’s glass walkway in Tianmenshan and decided that this was a China adventure she needed to have!  We were leaving Vietnam and I hadn’t booked any transport so we decided to fly into Zhangjaijie and spend some time exploring the national park on our way to Sri Lanka.

On our second day in town we took the worlds longest cable car up to Tianmen Mountain to explore the glass walkway. There was lots of excitement and a bit of trepidation as we soared up the mountain, over 1.5 kilometres high and home to walking paths, the cable car, a chair lift and three glass walkways fixed to the side of the mountain.

 

After wandering the paths that curve around the mountains we arrived at the start of the China glass walkway. There was no wait time and we donned our soft red booties – to protect the glass from scratches – and made our way around two of the three walkways.

Why did you want to go on the glass walkway?

I wanted to go because it’s looks scary and my middle name is scary. And it looked fun and like something new to try and for me to face something I’ve never done before and see what it’s like to do fake flying.

And it looked awesome.

 

What was it like?

It was kind of freaky. It was clear and more over the edge on the second one than the first one.

It was strange looking down cause you could feel like you were falling.

The first one was kind of foggy so it was easy.

It was fun when me and mummy were lying down on the glass.

I loved it . It was cool and awesome.

The boots were a bit wet and kind of weird cause I’ve had them in the ball pit before but I didn’t know you have to wear them with glass. But you have to wear them so the glass doesn’t get scratched.

My favourite part was when two people were freaked out and then their friends were scaring them. They didn’t want to walk on the glass and were holding onto the mountain.

 

What is your advice to kids about trying the glass walkway?

It’s kind of scary but you will get used to it.

Definitely do it but wear lots of clothes up the mountain because it is freezing when it’s not summer.

And make sure you do the cable car but the chair lift is freezing.

It was really, really cool.

The glass is super clear so you can see right down to the ground far, far at the bottom and the bendy road.

There was no pushing or crowding.

You can get a photo taken at the end that only costs $3 to buy so your mum will buy you four.

It is fun to take the cable car up and the bus on the way down goes around 99 bends.

It is lots of fun for you and your mum and dad. I love the China glass walkway.

Where to stay:

We stayed at the awesome Zhangjaijie Yijiaquin Hotel and it was fabulous. Great rooms, $25 AUS a night and the most awesome owner and host, Rocky, who was so super helpful, arranged our cable car tickets so we didn’t have to queue, walked us up to the bus when we went to stay in the mountains and helped me sort our plans out when I missed our train to Yangshuo.
