It’s a new year and time to start planning adventures – but travel is expensive right now both at home and overseas. Here are the five places I reckon families should visit for affordable, fun and rewarding holidays this year. Some are old favourites, some are new, but we’ve visited all of them in 2022 and highly recommend you make your way there in 2023 – and if you want to do it with a group, join one of my family group trips.
If you’re heading to warm weather – like all of these destinations, why not try traveling carry on only? Here’s all the tips and everything you need to know about carry on travel. And don’t forget to get your VPN (read why you need one here) and travel insurance before you go.

Vanuatu
It’s so beautiful and friendly and won’t break the bank. Most outdoor activities are free or very cheap and accommodation and flights are affordable. Our favourite spots were the Blue Lagoon and Raru Falls – blog post coming soon.

Hoi An, Vietnam
We love this gorgeous lantern town with its delicious food, fascinating creative and entrepreneurial culture, beaches, festivals and rice paddies. Check out where to stay and what to eat here or join our family trips or women only trips.
- Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Ooh we love this city – there is just so much to explore here – read all about it here – and use it as a base for exploring more of fabulous Malaysia like Ipoh, Melaka and Rawa Island – and even make your way to Borneo and explore Kota Kinabalu, the Kinabatangan River and Kuching.
- The Philippines
Another great love of ours, the Philippines is chockers with beautiful beaches, waterfalls, caves and fabulous reefs for snorkelling. Our favourite places are Cebu, Siquijor and Coron – we just love the Philippines! - Cruising with Royal Caribbean This was a new experience for us in 2023 and it was so much fun we are going again this year. There is so much to do onboard like surfing, iFly, dodge cars, treasure hunts and quizzes and so much more! Read about what we loved the most about cruising here.
