We’ve just been to Fiji’s Mana Island. It was incredible. And so was my gluttony at the breakfast and dinner buffets. Four kilos later what did I learn about the holiday buffet blowout?
Eliminate the delusion
Breakfast buffets are the worst. I went mental and told myself I would a) work it off during the day (as if laying by the pool scoffing cocktails works anything off) and b) wouldn’t eat lunch (yes I did, every day) and also wouldn’t eat much at dinner (as if – dinner buffet madness was just as bad).
Breakfast…poached, scrambled and fried eggs, omelets, cereal, pastries, yogurt, custard, bacon, pancakes and cream, hashbrowns, fries…you name it and it was there. Delusion! Buffet madness. If you don’t eat like this at home then don’t do it on holidays…especially as it is the time you are most likely to be in a bikini!!!
I have no control so measures must be put in place pre-holiday.
Next time I will not opt for a breakfast buffet and will take weetbix and buy milk. That’s all three-year-old Em wanted and I spent half the time scoffing food into my mouth and the other half trying to get her to eat. This way we will eliminate kilos and stress and can eat a relaxed breakfast on the beach with our BYO weetbix in BYO bowls with BYO spoons. Perfect!
I don’t need to experience foods from around the world while on holiday.
Fijian resort buffets are themed every night – it’s a food of the world spectacular on an island in the Pacific. Oceania, European, Italian, Mexican…a new type of food to stuff your face with every 24 hours. This is also not needed! Next time I will book the a la carte restaurant for dinner – ours cost around the same as the buffet, or a small bit more – and eat normal sized portion controlled by others. And by eliminating breakfast buffet madness, there is less of an impact from dinner buffet madness relapse.
But…there is no way I am eliminating the cocktails.
