Yes, you can holiday as a single mum: here’s five reasons why you should

If you’re a single mum – or solo mum as I like to call myself – you’re already super amazing and most likely there’s nothing you can’t do. So why stop at holidays? Yes, it can be a little challenging to manage the kids all on your own but you’re used to that right? And you can make your own holiday rules to make holiday life easier (like device time whenever you need a break). So if you’re dreaming of a holiday here are five reasons to get you closer to that fab time away.

  1. A change of scenery will do you good.

Daggy but true. Taking a break and changing your view and day-to-day can lift your perspective and get your brain firing in different ways. It’s always good to have a shake and reset. I went to Fiji with my four month old after I become a solo mum and it was so good to create a line in the sand and come back refreshed and ready to move forward.

  2. You’ll create new bonds with your kids.

A different environment, different things to do and none of the routine and stresses of home with help create new bonds. Sharing new experiences with your kids is one of the best ways to bond, and you’re creating amazing memories to look back on together. I have incredible memories from traveling with my daughter Emmie, and we often talk about them, they transport us out of where we are, and are so nice to reminisce about.  Put social media down and enjoy time together in a different space.

  3. Start small and you’ll be doing big trips in no time.

Start with a holiday down the road, house sit for friends or take a staycation in the city. Take the time to start practicing and planning for bigger holidays down the track. Take note of how your kids respond. Do they like change? Do they enjoy being in different places? What can you do to make it easier for them (and you). Soon enough you’ll be ready for a big trip.

  4. Feel empowered and confident

There’s nothing like executing a family holiday all by yourself to feel so confident and proud of yourself. We all need a boost right? And if it messes up and doesn’t’t go to plan, don’t worry. You’re still making those memories and just laugh about it and try again.

  5. For all same reasons you used to holiday

Yes it’s different taking kids on holidays by yourself, especially if you’re used to doing it with a partner. But regardless of who you have with you, holidays are the best. Remember why you love them, what makes them special, and create your new family holiday moments and rituals with your kids. You’re taking the first step towards new adventures! Go forth!
